Every spring, before most of the forest has even thought about waking up, the trilliums are already there. Three petals. Three sepals. Three leaves. Everything in perfect threes, as if nature decided this particular flower needed its own very specific set of rules.

The Trillium Story

Trilliums are one of the few plants that propagate through a process called myrmecochory, that wonderful word that means ants are responsible for planting them. Each trillium seed has a small fatty appendage called an elaiosome attached to it, packed with fats and nutrients that ants find completely irresistible. An ant carries the seed back to her nest, the colony eats only the elaiosome, and then the seed is discarded in their compost pile where it germinates and grows into a new trillium plant. The ant gets a nutritious meal. The trillium gets planted in exactly the right spot. Neither one is harmed. Both benefit completely.

Every patch of trilliums you have ever stopped to admire in the spring woodland exists because of ants doing this quiet and essential work. The forest plants its own flowers and we rarely stop to notice.

The Earrings

Each of these sterling silver trillium stud earrings is made entirely from scratch, which means no two are ever exactly alike, just as no two trillium flowers in the forest are ever exactly alike. The three petals are hand carved with their characteristic veining and texture, the three pointed sepals tuck neatly beneath them, and tiny bead stamens sit at the center of each flower. They are small and detailed and quietly beautiful, the kind of earrings that reward the person who looks closely.

I made these earrings because trilliums are one of my favorite signs that spring has truly arrived in the New Hampshire woods. They are so simple and so perfectly formed and they carry such an extraordinary story about ants and seeds and the quiet way the forest takes care of itself.
