Every ghost needs somewhere to rest between hauntings. This one found a coffin just the right size for naps, a glittering orange stone that looks like a little piece of October, and a stack of rings to call home. He is not scary in the least. Sunstone and the Color of Fall

Sunstone is a feldspar, the same big mineral family that gives us moonstone and labradorite. Its sparkle is called aventurescence, or schiller. It comes from tiny, plate shaped mineral crystals trapped inside the stone, lying in parallel layers like a stack of microscopic mirrors. When you tilt the stone, they all catch the light at once and flash orange and gold. Depending on where a sunstone was formed, those little reflectors can be hematite, goethite, or copper.

Autumn leaves get their orange in a surprisingly similar way. Orange pigments called carotenoids are in a leaf all summer long, hidden behind the green of chlorophyll. When the days shorten and the tree begins shutting down for winter, the chlorophyll breaks down and the orange is revealed. It is less a color change than a color reveal. In both the stone and the leaf, the orange was there all along, just waiting for the right moment to show.

The Piece
