On a warm summer evening, just as the light fades from the sky, something golden lifts from the leaf litter and begins to glow. Lucia has woken up. And she has brought her light with her.

Meet Lucia

Her name means light in Latin, and it suits her perfectly. Lucia is a firefly, one of the most magical creatures in the summer garden, and she has made her home on a leaf that she knows very well. She spent the winter there, tucked safely beneath the fallen leaves as a larva, waiting for the warmth to return. Fireflies overwinter in leaf litter just as so many other beloved creatures do, which is one of the most important reasons to leave your leaves in place each autumn. Every pile of fallen leaves is a tiny protected world, full of lives waiting for spring.

Lucia waited. And now she glows.

The Magic

Lucia's abdomen is made from permanently glowing borosilicate hard glass. Give her a moment in sunlight or under a lamp and she will glow a beautiful blue for you in the dark. She does not need batteries. She does not need to be plugged in. She just needs a little light to remind her what she is capable of, and then she will do the rest herself.

I think there is something rather wonderful about that.

This specific glow in the dark borosilicate glass is extraordinarily rare and has become nearly impossible to source. I have a small remaining supply and I am not certain I will ever be able to find more. This means that only a very limited number of Lucias will ever exist. When my glass is gone there will never be another Lucia exactly like her. She is not just a piece of jewelry. She is a tiny irreplaceable piece of magic. If she calls to you, please do not wait too long.

The Firefly

Lucia's body is made entirely from solid 14k gold, shaped entirely by hand to look just as if a real firefly has landed on a leaf and stopped to look around. Her six legs, her delicate head, her golden thorax, all formed individually and fused together with great care. The leaf she rests on is made from recycled sterling silver, etched by pressing a real leaf through my mill so that every vein and edge is captured exactly as nature made it. No two leaves will ever be exactly alike.

The twisty sterling silver stem is soldered closed to hold Lucia safely on her 18 inch sterling silver rope chain, ready to wear and ready to glow from the moment she arrives.

A bracelet version is also available if you would prefer to wear Lucia on your wrist rather than around your neck. A double sterling silver band that measures 6.5 inches long with a 1 inch opening in back for slipping the bracelet on.

No two Lucias will ever be exactly alike, just as no two fireflies in the summer garden ever are. Each leaf is etched from a real leaf making every single one unique. And with the glow in the dark glass becoming increasingly impossible to find, the number of Lucias that will ever exist in the world is very small indeed. When she finds her home she is truly irreplaceable.

I made Lucia because fireflies are one of my favorite signs that summer has truly arrived, and because I wanted to capture that exact moment when one lifts from the leaves and lights up the evening. She is made from 14k gold because she deserved nothing less. Her glow in the dark bum was the part I could not wait to make. Give her a little sunshine and watch what she does in the dark. Made Just for You

Lucia will be made to order just for you in my little studio in the New Hampshire woods. Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for her to be created. She will then be packaged safely and sent on her way to you with a tracking number so you can follow her on her journey to her new home.
