Pronking is the scientific term for those sudden explosive leaps and kicks that baby goats perform for what appears to be absolutely no reason other than the sheer joy of being alive. They spring straight up into the air, twist, kick their heels, and land ready to do it all over again. Scientists believe pronking may signal to predators that the animal is healthy and fast and not worth chasing. But watching a baby goat pronk it is very hard to believe they are doing anything other than celebrating the fact that today exists.

And it turns out that goats are far more emotionally complex than most people realize. Research has shown that goats can actually read human facial expressions, preferring to approach and interact with happy human faces over unhappy ones. They form deep emotional bonds with their herd and with the humans who care for them. They are not simple farm animals. They are sensitive, playful, surprisingly intelligent creatures who just happen to also be absolutely, completely, unreasonably cute.

Each tiny goat is cut out entirely by hand from sterling silver, which means every single one is a tiny bit different from the next, just like real baby goats. They are given texture and dark spots to suggest their fluffy coats and each one is caught in mid pronk, jumping, kicking, and just being completely happy. They are about half an inch tall and lightweight enough to wear every single day.

I made these earrings because I am pretty sure there is nothing in the world much cuter than a baby goat learning about the world for the first time. Those kicks of joy are extraordinary. I wanted to capture that moment, that specific combination of wobbliness and pure unself conscious happiness, and turn it into something you could wear every day as a little reminder to pronk whenever the mood strikes.
