Mourning Cloak Butterfly Bracelet

Sale price$500.00
1 in stock

When the mourning cloak butterfly closes her wings she even resembles a battered dead leaf. A drab and mottled brown, the edges of her wings appear tattered. This is probably because she will crawl into a pile of dead fall leaves when the temperature gets too cold for her in the fall to sleep there for the winter. She perfectly blends in with those leaves while in torpor. One of a small handful of butterflies and moths that survive all winter as adults here in Massachusetts. Another reason why we need to leave the leaves.

When a mourning cloak butterfly has her wings open, she has the most beautiful band of gold around the edges of her wings and dainty bright blue spots above the bands. I mimicked this using sterling and brass. She has been resting in a curled up American elm leaf. I chose this native tree because their leaves will turn a bright gold in the fall just like her wing edges. You will often find the American elm as her host plant where she lays the most wonderfully shaped eggs that appear like tiny stars!

This one of a kind bracelet is made from sterling silver with bits of brass on the edges of her wings. She will be packaged up and mailed off to you within 3-5 business days.
