Meet Basil

Basil is an Abyssinian guinea pig, one of the oldest guinea pig breeds in existence, with a history stretching back centuries. You can tell an Abyssinian immediately by their coat, that magnificent wild rosette pattern where the fur grows outward in every direction from multiple central points, giving them a permanently windswept and slightly chaotic appearance that is completely and utterly their own. No two Abyssinian coats are ever exactly alike. Every rosette pattern is unique to that individual animal.

Basil's coat is particularly magnificent. And right now Basil has more important things to think about than his coat because someone has left him an extraordinary pile of snacks and he has wheeked loudly about it and now he is going to eat every single one.

The Earrings

These are a mismatched pair that tells a complete little story. On one earring Basil peers out from behind a carved blue tourmaline leaf, his fluffy rosette coat hand carved in extraordinary detail, his tiny face alert and focused on what matters most. On the other earring his snack collection waits for him, hand carved kale leaves, tiny carrots, and the most impossibly small cluster of grapes you will ever see in your life, all arranged together with another carved blue tourmaline leaf catching the light above.

Both blue tourmaline stones are carved into the shape of leaves, their deep teal color a perfect contrast to the oxidized sterling silver of Basil and his vegetables. Every single element of these earrings was made entirely by hand from sterling silver from scratch. The hoop itself is about 1.5 inches tall and wide, lightweight and wearable every day.

I made these earrings because I love the sounds that guinea pigs make more than almost anything. That wheek of excitement when they spot something delicious is one of the purest expressions of joy I have ever heard from any animal.
