Luna Moth on her Sweet Gum Tree Leaf Necklace

The luna moth, Actias luna, is an exquisite creature exclusive to North America, captivating all who encounter it. Its rarity in the wild has led some to believe in its mystical nature. Personally, I am inclined to embrace such beliefs. The name "luna" stems from the moon-like markings adorning its wings, serving as a deterrent to potential predators. Upon emerging from their cocoon, these moths lack mouthparts and spend a mere week in their moth form. Caterpillars feed on only a select few very specific tree leaves. Hickory, sumac, walnut, persimmon, and the sweet gum tree. This luna moth was given a unique shaped sweet gum leaf to live on. 

The sterling silver necklace created for this pendant measures at 19 inches long. You are able to make the necklace shorter, if you choose to, by using the lobster clasp in another loop within the chain. The luna moth's leaf is about 2 inches across. She was given solid 14k gold across the top of her wings and her 4 wing spots that are used to protect herself from predators is solid gold as well. This necklace and moth are entirely hand forged to be one of a kind.
