The Korok

Koroks are the small forest spirits of Hyrule, ancient companions of the Great Deku Tree who spend their days hiding in the most beautiful and unexpected corners of the world, tucked under rocks and perched in treetops and waiting patiently to be found by someone paying close enough attention. They are curious and joyful and endlessly enthusiastic about the small things, a new flower, an interesting stone, a particularly good hiding spot. They collect seeds. They complete little puzzles nobody asked them to solve. They shake their berry twigs at you in excitement when you find them and give you something precious for your trouble.

They are, in other words, exactly the kind of company you want on a walk in the woods.

The Legend of Zelda series has been part of so many people's lives for so long that finding a fellow traveler in it feels like recognition, like meeting someone who also stops to look at interesting rocks and keeps a curiosity cabinet and considers getting lost in the forest a good afternoon. These earrings were made for those people specifically.

The Piece

Two koroks, each one made entirely from scratch from recycled sterling silver, cut and etched and given their own tiny personalities. Each one holds a small berry twig and is shaking it with great enthusiasm, which is simply what koroks do and they are not going to apologize for it. Their little leaf shaped bodies are textured and layered, their stubby arms and feet extending in different directions the way koroks always seem to be mid-gesture about something.

Their faces are the most extraordinary part. Each one was made by pressing a real leaf directly into the silver and rolling it through the press, transferring the exact veins and texture of that particular leaf permanently into the metal. The leaf was destroyed in the process. This means that these two faces exist nowhere else in the world. They are the only record those two leaves will ever leave behind, pressed permanently into recycled silver and ready to go on adventures.

Both koroks are approximately one inch tall and hang from sterling silver ear wires, dancing around with every movement the way koroks absolutely would if given the opportunity.

These are the only koroks with these particular faces. The leaves used to make them no longer exist. When this pair finds their person they will never be made again exactly like this, because the leaves that made them are already gone.

A Note from Tamara

I do not usually make pieces from video games but I made an exception for koroks because they feel like they belong in my world anyway. They are forest spirits who love small beautiful things and want to show them to you. They hide in nature waiting for someone curious enough to find them. They shake their berry twigs at you when you do. I have been making jewelry about the hidden wonders of the natural world for years and koroks have always felt like kindred spirits in that project. I hope whoever wears these finds a few of them on their next walk in the woods. They are out there. You just have to pay attention.
