Mable & Fern BFF (best fish friends) Hoop Earrings

Any time I come across a little pond I stop and peek down into the water to see who I can find. Most of the time the answer is nobody. They are hiding. They are always hiding. And they are very good at it.

Meet Mabel and Fern

Mabel and Fern are two tiny calico goldfish who have made their home beneath the lily pads and they have absolutely no intention of coming out until they are ready. They have been here long enough to know exactly where the good hiding spots are, how many lily pad layers are needed for adequate cover, and precisely how long to stay still before the shadow overhead moves on. They are patient. They are spotted. They are completely content exactly where they are.

If you look very carefully you might catch a glimpse of them. A flash of scale. A tiny fin moving just slightly. And rising up from each of them, a trail of tiny air bubbles drifting toward the surface, the only real evidence that anyone is home down there at all.

The Earrings

Each sterling silver hoop curves like the surface of a pond, just over an inch tall, with tiny air bubbles rising up the wire from where Mabel and Fern are hiding below. At the bottom of each hoop a cluster of beautifully layered lily pads fans out, their overlapping leaves catching the light differently from every angle, and tucked beneath them a tiny hand carved goldfish peeks out. Both fish were carved from layers of sterling silver and given their own individual spots and scales so that no two are exactly alike, just as no two calico fish ever are.

Every single element of these earrings was made entirely by hand from sterling silver from scratch. They are one of a kind and they will never be made again exactly like this.

A Note from Tamara

I made these earrings because I am the kind of person who stops at every pond and every puddle and every garden water feature to see who might be living in there. Mabel and Fern are for everyone else who does the same thing. The pond peerers. The ones who always look down. I hope they make you smile every time you catch a glimpse of a tiny fin in the water on your next walk.
