Alistair the Mouse Fidget Pendant

Somewhere in the autumn leaf litter, a tiny furry gentleman is going about his very important business. He is foraging. He is hiding. He is waiting to be found by exactly the right person.

Meet Alistair

Alistair is a chubby, sweet little mouse that would love to be your adventuring friend. He lives inside a glass domed sterling silver pendant surrounded by nine fallen autumn leaves, loose inside his little home, free to rustle and hide and make the most beautiful soft tinkling sound when you give him a gentle shake.

Mice like Alistair are some of the most important creatures in the forest ecosystem. As they forage through the leaf litter and soil they spread fungal spores that connect to the roots of trees and wildflowers, providing nutrients that keep the whole forest alive. The next time someone tells you mice are pests, you can kindly inform them that mice are basically planting the forest.

A Piece to Hold Onto

I designed Alistair to be more than beautiful. I wanted to make something you could hold onto in times of worry. Something to fidget with. Rub your fingers over the smooth glass dome and feel the texture of the bezel holding it in place. Give him a little shake and listen to him rustling through his autumn leaves. He is the kind of piece that feels like comfort in your hands.

He is also, as I discovered entirely by accident, the world's greatest cat toy. All I have to do is shake him and my cats come running from anywhere in the house. You have been warned.

The Craftsmanship

Every element of Alistair's world was made entirely by hand from sterling silver, copper, and brass. His nine fallen leaves were each textured using real autumn leaves so they look exactly like the real thing, caught mid tumble in a little breeze. Alistair himself is hand carved and oxidized to bring out every detail of his fur. The sterling silver back reflects light beautifully through the domed glass so you can always see clearly into his home.

On the back of the pendant you will find Max, my maker's mark, because every piece that leaves my studio carries a little piece of him with it.

A Note from Tamara

I made Alistair because I wanted to celebrate a creature that most people overlook entirely. Mice are extraordinary little beings doing quiet and essential work in the forest every single day. I hope that wherever Alistair goes he brings a little of that wonder with him, along with the softest tinkling sound and maybe the occasional appearance of a very curious cat.
