She has been flying for several nights now and her wings show it. That slight wear at the edges is not damage. It is evidence. It is the physical record of every dark garden she has moved through, every branch she has navigated by moonlight, every mile of night air between where she started and where she is now. She is not diminished by it. She is exactly as beautiful as she was when she first emerged, and she is also something more than that. She has lived in her wings. It shows.
The Luna Moth
Actias luna is native to North America and is one of the largest moths on the continent, with a wingspan that can reach four and a half inches. She flies only at night, navigating by moonlight and starlight, those long trailing hindwing tails spinning as she moves to confuse the echolocation of hunting bats. The tails are not decoration. They are a defense system, intercepting the sonar signal and sending it back as something the bat cannot interpret, and in that fraction of a second Phoebe slips away into the dark.
Adult luna moths do not have mouths. They have no digestive system. During the long weeks of their caterpillar stage they consume enough energy to sustain their entire adult life, and then their mouthparts dissolve during metamorphosis and they emerge from their leaf-wrapped cocoons unable to eat at all. They have approximately one week to live. Everything they are, everything stored and grown and transformed in the dark, leads to this one brief luminous week of flight and moonlight before the cycle begins again.
When you find a luna moth with worn wings you are looking at a creature near the end of that week. She has been everywhere her wings have taken her. The wear is not imperfection. It is the whole story.
The Piece
Her name is Phoebe, after the ancient Titan goddess of the moon, older even than Selene, who was said to radiate light and intellect in equal measure. It felt right for a moth whose brief life burns so completely bright.
Phoebe rests on a sterling silver twig band, her wings spread wide across your finger, deeply oxidized so every vein and marking reads in rich dark relief. The wing edges carry that slight natural wear that real luna moths accumulate over their nights of flight, carved deliberately into the silver as a reminder that beauty and a life fully lived are not in conflict with each other. They are the same thing.
Four small dots of solid 14k gold mark her wing spots, and a thin line of gold traces the top edge of each wing, warm and luminous against the dark oxidized silver the way moonlight catches the edge of something in a dark garden. Her feathery antennae rise from her head in careful detail. The twig band beneath her is textured with bark, organic and uneven in the most intentional way.
The ring fits a size 8.25. If you would like your own Phoebe made in a different size please send a message before purchasing and she will be made just for you. Each custom ring will be its own slightly unique moth, because no two luna moths are ever exactly alike and it seemed right to honor that.
The Craftsmanship
- Ring face: luna moth, approximately ring-width across
- Material: sterling silver throughout, oxidized, with solid 14k gold wing details
- Band: sterling silver twig band
- Size: 8.25 as shown, custom sizes available on request
- Edition: one of a kind as shown, custom sizes made to order
One of a Kind
There is only one Phoebe exactly as shown. These wings, this gold, this twig band, these particular worn edges that tell her particular story: they exist once. Custom sizes will be made fresh by hand and will be their own unique moths with their own slightly different wings.
A Note from Tamara
I made this ring because I have always found something deeply moving about finding a luna moth with worn wings. There is a tendency to see wear as a flaw, as something that diminishes beauty, and I think that is exactly backwards. Those worn edges are proof of a life lived completely and without reservation, every night of that one extraordinary week used for exactly what it was meant for. I gave her gold because she deserved it. I made her wings slightly worn because that is when she is most herself. I hope whoever wears Phoebe carries that same energy with them, the kind that has been everywhere and shows it and is more beautiful for it.
