Inside each of these earrings, a small piece of the ocean is glowing. Warm and orange and ancient, it has been building coral reefs and painting the inside of seashells for hundreds of millions of years.
The Stone That Builds the Ocean
Aragonite is the mineral form of calcium carbonate and it is one of the most quietly essential substances on earth. Without it there would be no coral reefs. Corals build their entire skeletal structures from aragonite, secreting it layer by layer to create the vast and intricate reef systems that shelter a quarter of all marine life on the planet. Shellfish use it to build their shells. Oysters use it to create their pearls. And the iridescent mother of pearl that lines the inside of abalone shells, with all its extraordinary shifting color, is also aragonite, built through the same remarkable biological process.
Here is what makes aragonite even more fascinating. Under normal surface conditions it is technically unstable. Geologically speaking, it wants to rearrange itself into a more stable mineral structure over long timescales. And yet it persists. Preserved in fossils hundreds of millions of years old. Growing actively in caves and hot springs and ocean floors today. It is something of a geological rebel, refusing to follow the rules it is supposed to follow, and the ocean depends on it entirely for that refusal.
These two particular stones caught my eye immediately. The deep iron red at their centers fading to almost clear quartz at the ends, their shape and coloration unlike any other aragonite I had seen. I hand picked them because I thought they were beautiful and I knew exactly what I wanted to build around them.
The Earrings
Each stone sits inside a hand formed sterling silver cage, held safely within the bars while still completely visible from every angle. The warm orange glow of the aragonite catches the light through the silver bars like a tiny lantern. At the top of each cage a beautifully textured oxidized bead connects to the sterling silver ear wire. Every element was made entirely by hand from recycled sterling silver.
Each earring is about 2 inches long from where the ear wire enters your ear, lightweight and elegant and completely unlike anything else you will find anywhere.
- Length: About 2 inches from ear wire
- Stones: Hand picked aragonite crystals
- Material: Recycled sterling silver throughout
- Style: French wire dangle earrings
One of a Kind
There is only one pair of these earrings in the world. The stones inside them are unrepeatable and will never be arranged in exactly this way again.
A Note from Tamara
I made these earrings because those two aragonite stones stopped me in my tracks. That deep iron red center fading to almost clear at the ends is something I had never seen quite like that before. I wanted to build something around them that let you see them from every angle without covering any of their beauty. A cage felt exactly right. Something that holds them safely while letting all that warm light through. I hope they glow for you the way they glowed for me the moment I first held them up to the light.
