Meet Humphrey
There is a particular quality to the way a toad sits. Not the nervous alertness of a frog, ready to leap at any moment. Something much more settled than that. A toad sits with the quiet confidence of a creature who has been in this exact spot many times before and has no intention of moving until it suits him. Humphrey has that quality in abundance.
American toads are extraordinary garden allies and deeply misunderstood creatures. They eat enormous numbers of pest insects, slugs, and worms every single night, doing quiet and essential work in gardens and woodlands across North America. They absorb water directly through their skin rather than drinking it, which makes them exquisitely sensitive to the health of the environment around them. And contrary to the old superstition, they absolutely do not cause warts. They are completely harmless to humans and enormously beneficial to every garden they inhabit.
If you find a toad in your garden, that toad has chosen you. Leave a little water out for them. They will stay.
The Necklace
Humphrey sits inside a clean elegant sterling silver teardrop frame, his copper body with its silver belly filling the space with complete contentment. Every single one of his spots and warts was cut out individually by hand and placed with tweezers onto his rough textured body, which means no two Humphreys will ever be exactly alike. Each one is his own toad with his own particular arrangement of spots, his own character, his own way of sitting in his frame and looking out at the world.
He is about 1.5 inches tall and comes on an 18 inch sterling silver rope chain, ready to wear from the moment he arrives.

A Very Limited Edition
Each Humphrey is made entirely from scratch and by hand, which means each one will be slightly different from the last. The spots will fall in different places. The texture will catch the light differently. They are the same toad and completely their own toad at the same time, which feels exactly right.

I made Humphrey because I have always loved toads with a particular fierceness. They are so completely themselves in a way that I find deeply admirable. They do not try to be frogs. They do not apologize for their warts or their slow pace or their preference for sitting very still in one good spot for a very long time. Humphrey is for everyone who has ever found a toad in their garden and felt genuinely pleased about it. I hope he sits on your chest with the same settled confidence he brings to everything else he does.
Made Just for You
Humphrey will be made to order just for you in my little studio in the New Hampshire woods. Please allow 1 to 2 weeks for him to be created. He will then be packaged safely and sent on his way to you with a tracking number so you can follow him on his journey to his new home.
