Atropa belladonna, deadly nightshade, is a beautiful, psychoactive, and even medicinal plant. A long and rich history surrounds this bushy perennial herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. Belladonna means ‘beautiful woman’ as it was used by Renaissance women to dilate their pupils to attract attention. Atropa is in reference to Atropos, one of the Three Fates in Greek mythology. Along with her sisters, Clotho and Lachesis, Atropos and the Fates controlled the future of every human. Clotho spun the thread of life, Lachesis measured it, and Atropos severed it, deciding for herself how each human would die, and when. Considering every bit of this beautiful plant is poisonous, the name it was given by Carl Linnaeus himself, is darkly fitting.

This pendant is made from solid sterling silver and hand carved to give it life. There are blooming bell shaped flowers, a closed bud, and a ripe berry on this medicinal twig. A deep purpley-pink star sapphire gemstone at the top has these wonderful grey, sparkly, wispy clouds throughout it. The stone seems to change color depending on where you view it and the lighting surrounding it. The entire pendant from top to bottom is 3 inches long and 1.25 inches wide. It comes on a sterling silver rope chain necklace that is 18 inches long. A one of a kind handmade piece.
