Did you know that fungi are genetically closer to humans than they are to plants? That was a fact that I just did not believe when I first heard it. They are neither plant nor animal so are in their own kingdom, but are closer to animals than they are plants. They are also one of the largest life forms on earth. The way that mushrooms grow, almost all of it is below ground where we cannot see, and can be several miles around as just one fungus. The mushrooms are really just the fruiting bodies of the mycelium that grow under the soil. It is said that 80% of the ground we walk on IS mycelium. It is amazing what these little things can do for us that I seem to learn about almost every day. Just this weekend, my husband made me breakfast with plant based breakfast sausage created with mushroom mycelium and it was delicious!
These mushroom forest earrings are made entirely from recycled sterling silver and carved by hand. Each little mushroom, formed while molten in my flame, emerge as one of a kind creations. They are fused together with another and then soil planted below them. Silver dust is sprinkled and fused to their tops making it as if fairies had just been there. Then each mushroom cap has gills carved below. These hoops are about 2.5 inches long from where they enter your ear. Bright blue Kingman turquoise stones sit above each cluster.
